ALIMENTI BIOLOGICI: cosa significa?

ORGANIC FOOD: what does it mean?

Organic agriculture is a very current and continually expanding phenomenon throughout the world. In Europe, where there has been a more recent increase in production and consumption, Italy holds the record for the number of producing companies and surface area involved.

More and more often we hear about ORGANIC FOOD or ORGANIC AGRICULTURE and this immediately leads us to think that it is an area that is attentive not only from a human health point of view but also to well-being and respect for the environment.

But what is really meant by these terms?

By ORGANIC FOOD we mean all those products deriving from ORGANIC AGRICULTURE, i.e. an alternative agriculture to the conventional one both for the aspects concerning the management of the farm and for those concerning the production process.

The ITALIAN ORGANIC AGRICULTURE ASSOCIATION (AIAB) tells us that the term "organic agriculture" indicates a cultivation and/or breeding method that only allows the use of substances "naturally present in nature", excluding the use of chemically synthesized substances (fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides). Organic farming therefore means developing a production model that avoids the excessive exploitation of natural resources, in particular soil, water and air.

According to what was reported by the AIAB, an agricultural company that intends to carry out its business based on an organic approach must guarantee the production of food by following:

  • best environmental practices,
  • a high level of biodiversity,
  • the conversion of natural resources
  • animal welfare

To put these fundamental points into practice, you must comply with specific regulations issued by the European Community, Regulations (EC) no. 834/2007 and n. 889/2008 (available at the link https://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2007:189:0001:0023:IT:PDF https://eur-lex. europa.eu/legal-content/IT/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32008R0889&from=IT ).

Numerous studies highlight how the production and consumption of organic foods has positive effects on human life, limiting the negative impacts of agricultural activities on air, soil and biodiversity, reducing the consumption of fertilizers, water and energy.

However, there are also important challenges that "organic" must respond to, first of all its contribution to feeding the ever-increasing world population, currently mainly supported by conventional agriculture. In this context, in the comparison between the productivity of organic and conventional agriculture, the concept of "food security" has a central role since, according to the official definition of the World Health Organization (1996) the latter is achieved when the population has access to not only sufficient, but also healthy and nutritious food. The necessary future commitment for organic agriculture is therefore evident in improving productivity per unit of cultivated area, maintaining a high quality standard and a low impact on the environment.

To identify an organic food, such as IoBoscoVivo online organic products, the EU Organic logo is placed on the label, i.e. the stylized leaf made of stars on a green background. The logo is mandatory for most organic products and must be displayed according to a set of specific rules in order to avoid consumer confusion, help maintain trust in organic food products and support authorities in their inspection regimes. Foods bearing this symbol are certified foods, produced according to rigorous standards regarding respect for the environment and animal welfare and which are periodically checked by authorized control agencies.

All IoBoscoVivo products are organic foods certified by the European logo and therefore meet all the rigorous production, treatment, transport and storage conditions required at European level. Our products are all recognized as organic: therefore not only the dry and granulated IoBoscoVivo shiitake mushrooms and the shiitake mushroom flavorings but also products such as the shiitake mushroom cream soup or mushroom baked products such as breadsticks as we pay particular attention in the choice of certified organic raw materials for their production.
